Dragon Psych 101

After J'nas's trip to the infirmary, Niyath and Hanreth discuss their riders. Jenna goes to see the new foals, and has a talk with S'phan.

Niyath> Hanreth senses that Niyath inquires, << Is your rider feeling better? >>

Dragon> Hanreth bespoke Niyath with << << He was angry. But now he swims in the high lake with me. >> >>

Niyath> I bespoke Hanreth with << Why was he angry? If he was ill, he should see the healers. Everyone knows that. >>

Dragon> Hanreth bespoke Niyath with << He is here with one of the healers. >>

Niyath> Hanreth senses that Niyath is puzzled. << Oh. My rider thought they would keep him and make him drink nasty things. Is he feeling better then? >>

Dragon> Hanreth bespoke Niyath with << He told me that it is a different kind of 'sick'. >>

Niyath> Hanreth senses that Niyath is now incredibly curious. << There is more than one kind of sick? What kind of sick is he? >>

Dragon> Niyath senses that Hanreth is a bit confused, << He says it is a sickness of the heart? >>

Dragon> Niyath senses that Hanreth practically crows, << He is sad because he thinks he has upset your rider! >>

Niyath> I bespoke Hanreth with << A sickness of the heart? - He has not upset- >> She breaks off, considering, and then says, a bit more truthfully, << Well, she did not like hearing that the other woman had done /that/. I do not understand why. >>

Dragon> Niyath senses that Hanreth is somber, << It does not matter. Will you pass an apology to Jenna? >> Yes, he spoke her name.

Niyath> Hanreth senses that Niyath agrees though, << She will want to know what for. >>

You push the stable door open and walk into the Stable.
Fort Stable
Solid stone walls and metal shutters make the interior of the Fort Weyr stable a dim but cozy place, kept warm against the mountain chill by the body heat of the animals that dwell here. A long, low building, its somewhat cramped space has been arranged to take care of a large weyr's needs efficiently. Box stalls stand along both walls, occupied by resident and visiting runners, a milk cow, and a chicken roost. Cross-tie rings are set at regular intervals along the wide aisle, and a tack room and stone-floored wash area are at the far end of the stable. A 'ladder' leads up to the loft, where feed and bedding are stored. The stable is clean and neatly organized, a testament to the work the resident Herders do here.

S'phan laughs. "Well, we've only just met..." He turns. "Jenna! How are you?"

Jenna pokes her head in and then the rest of her follows. She offers off a salute to S'phan, "I'm good, Saph, how about you. Came to see those runners Makai was talking about."

Dragon> Niyath senses that Hanreth considers a moment, << Tell her that he values her friendship and does not wish to upset her. >>

In the farthest stall from the door, Makai and S'phan are standing. In the stall next to it a runner mare and her filly are relaxing, while near where Makai is standing the filly's tiny brother is sleeping peacefully in his cradel of warm hay. Makai tendery rubs the soft fur for a moment, laughing gently to himself, before noticing Jenna. "Hello!" he says quietly. "They are right here," he greets with a smile.

Niyath> Hanreth senses that Niyath comes back after a moment and is apparently finding playing messenger amusing. << She says she was not upset, and that she has no say in who he spends nights with. >> A pause and then she asks, << Is this about Ahazeth's rider? >>

S'phan nods toward the foals. "Aren't they adorable?"

Dragon> Hanreth bespoke Niyath with << I do not know about Ahazeth's rider. >>

The filly perks its ear up towards the noise and hobbles to her feet. She sticks an inquisitive nose through the stall slats in Jenna's direction, knickering slightly.

Jenna smirks faintly at S'phan. "I think I'm supposed to evaluate their potential as a snack - Ahazeth was talking to Niyath about how runners were good to eat, and it caused all sorts of misundertandings." She nods towards the two, "They are right cute. and right beggars, for not being terribly old!" She digs out a lump of sweetner, asking Makai, "May I? Wasn't sure it was good for babies..."

Niyath> Hanreth senses that Niyath's tone is patient, << She would like to know if it is about Ahazeth's rider coming to visit? Will you ask him? >>

Makai shrugs. "I can't see it'll do em wrong, unless they object. They've just fed," then he pauses. "Not the smaller one, I wouldn't want him getting used to hand outs at such an early stage." he states firmly. "Maybe just a little for the little one, if she licks it, she's only milk feeding still yet...It'll be sevendays before she eats solids," he says with a smile.

S'phan raises an eyebrow. "Are they twins?"

Dragon> Niyath senses that Hanreth returns after a moment. << He says Ahazeth's rider's words surprised him. He is confused. >>

Makai chuckles. "Yes, and now you see why we are so worried about the little guy here," he said, pointing to the tiny half-sleeping foal. "His mother rejected him instantly," he tsks towards the mare, with Emerald chittering a bit for effect. "But he's got strength in him as you said..." he chuckles and smiles as the filly flicks its ears in the direction of sweetener.

Jenna holds the lump carefully to give the foal access to nuzzle at it. "I've always said runners had precious little sense - at least the four legged kind." Her tone is amused.

S'phan hrms to himself. "I'd never heard that about them...nor did I hear that they make good dragon snacks."

Niyath> Hanreth senses that Niyath relays that information and comes back after a moment, << My Jenna says that has happened different times with different riders. All of them bronzeriders. She says that many more will come before it is all over with. >> Just what 'it' is, she has no clue. << But that Ahazeth's rider has always been like that. >>

Makai chuckles. "Some do at that, but the little one there, turned istantly to me the minute she rejected him and tried to suck on finger," he states. "He wasn't stupid, he knew I could feed him, I just needed to get him the right milk..." and with that, he points to another half full skein cooling and ready for the next feeding.

Dragon> Hanreth bespoke Niyath with << Someimes our riders are confusing. >>

Jenna admits to S'phan, "Niyath's never eaten one. Though Hanreth said he hunted a wild one and it was awful. I may not be one who really likes runners that much, but I still don't think I'd like Niyath to eat one."

S'phan laughs. "Me neither. Toranth likes big, fat herdbeasts. He's never even eyed a runner beast." He pauses. "Though they get nervous around him anyway."

Niyath> Hanreth senses that Niyath agrees wholeheartedly. << Did Ahazeth's rider confuse your J'nas? Or did Jenna? >>

Makai gets up and sighs, smiling at the tiny male foal, who has lain its head back down to sleep. "I'd better tell the Stablemaster that the little guy is feeding, so that he can schedule my chores around it..." he says. "Take care," and with that he plods off towards the door.

Jenna leans against the railing. "So how've you and Toranth been? Have we just about driven you both between?"

S'phan calls, "Take care," after Makai, and then turns to Jenna. "We've been fine, and you've been fine." He smiles. "How are you?"

Dragon> Niyath senses that Hanreth mulls that over. << Both, I think. >>

Niyath> Hanreth senses that Niyath admits, << She says she is also confused. So at least he is in good company? >> The last appears to be Niyath's take on the matter, not Jenna's.

Dragon> Hanreth bespoke Niyath with << Maybe they can work out their confusion? >>

Jenna shrugs. "Wishing it were all over. Ready to learn how to fly between. Hoping I don't miss Merrin standing at Igen. Ready for my own weyr and to be done with this." She smiles a trifle wryly, cocking her eyes up to him. "Sorry, I'm whining, aren't I?"

S'phan shakes his head. "Not at all. And, if you're not flying between by the time Igen hatches, I'll talk to the weyrleaders and take you myself."

Niyath> Hanreth senses that Niyath agrees, << That sounds like a good idea. And something that would be very sensible. >> And hense, she approves of it. << How? >>

Jenna brightens a bit. "Thanks. It's just... been a very full couple of days. Niyath's been giving me awful headaches."

Dragon> Niyath senses that Hanreth is silent for a long while. << I do not know. /You/ are the responsible one. >> His tone actually carries something of a compliment.

S'phan nods sympathetically. "I'm sorry about that. If there's anything I can do for you..."

Niyath> Hanreth senses that Niyath considers for a long few minutes. << Well, it would help to know why your J'nas is confused. My Jenna does not like surprises. That is why she is confused. >>

Dragon> Hanreth bespoke Niyath with << J'nas says that if he knew what was wrong with him, he would not be confused. He does not like being confused. >>

Jenna shakes her head. "Not really. Just things I have to learn to deal with. Niyath'll slowly come around. She has to. It's just kinda odd. They're all so hung up about mating flights right now."

S'phan frowns slightly. "Is she? What's wrong?"

Jenna shakes her head. "/She/ isn't. The rest of the class is. You know, with them cleared to go off and, well, you know. Niyath's having none of it."

S'phan nods. "That's right...I'd heard something about that. How do you feel about it?"

Jenna shrugs. "I don't know. I'm half hoping she snaps out of it, and half hoping she never does. And worried that I might never be - well, anyway. It's not terribly important."

S'phan leans forward. "Might never what?"

Niyath> Hanreth senses that Niyath asks mildly, << Is there something wrong with him? The sickness of the heart? >>

Jenna mumbles something and pockets the sweetner lump. "It's not that I miss it, and I know I'm pretty much stuck with the situation until at least graduation, but what happens if she's no happier about it then? I've got to make her behave about it, but she gets so -" She searches for the word, "Emphatic."

S'phan nods. "That won't change, but they gain some ... depth of understanding."

Dragon> Niyath senses that Hanreth is confused. << He does not know why feels the way he does. I don't understand how feelings can be confusing. >>

Jenna sighs. "That's sort of what I'm afraid of. The Weyrwoman gave me an excellent example - suppose some Lord Holder is, well, invading my personal space, and Niyath has a fit about it? We can't afford to embarass the weyr. She's touchy enough about it now. If she doesn't change, I'm - well, it doesn't matter, I have to control her."

S'phan pats her arm comfortingly. "I really think things will improve..."

Niyath> Hanreth senses that Niyath rumbles softly. << Do not be confused. We should not be. It will help them think better. How does he feel? Other than confused? My Jenna is... >> She considers, << Regretful? >>

Dragon> Niyath senses that Hanreth agrees. << Regretful is a good word. >>

Jenna nods. "They kinda have to, don't they? Thanks, Saph. It's just hard - Well. You know me. I always hate coming in last. This race just isn't one for me to win, I guess." She smirks wryly.

S'phan grins. "It's early yet...not done. I know it will be okay."

Niyath> I bespoke Hanreth with << Why is your rider regretful? >>

Dragon> Hanreth bespoke Niyath with << He will not say, but /I/ think it is because of what happened in that jungle room. >>

Jenna shifts to perch on the stall rail. "So. Cheer me up? Tell me something funny?"

Niyath> Hanreth senses that Niyath considers. << When the woman slept? >>

S'phan thinks about that for a second. "Funny, eh?" He scratches at his hair. "Well...hmm." He blushes slightly. "I'm not so good under pressure."

Dragon> Niyath senses that Hanreth sends an affirmative.

Jenna snorts. "Hey, this is me, remember? Just... distract me?"

S'phan grins. "Okay...well. Have you ever met Baker Keara?"

Niyath> Hanreth senses that Niyath considers, rather obviously picking through her rider's memories. << That is the suprise my Jenna did not like. Though she believes she does not have a reason not to like it? >>

Jenna nods. "Course. She's the kinda flirty one, isn't she?"

S'phan coughs. "Um. Yes....maybe I should tell a different story."

Dragon> Niyath senses that Hanreth is excited, << That is it! >>

Jenna waves a hand, lightly kicking the fence rail. "No, no. I don't mind hearing about others. What about Master Keara?"

Niyath> I bespoke Hanreth with << That is what has your rider regretful? That Jenna does not have a reason not to like it? >>

S'phan tugs at one earlobe. "Well...*ahem*...she's got a child. Did you know that?"

Dragon> Niyath senses that Hanreth explains, << He is regretful that it happened and has no reason for feeling bad about it. >>

Jenna nods, squinting at Saph. "Rumor has it it could be yours, or even L'nan's." Then she winces slightly, "Sorry, was that too blunt?"

S'phan nods. "Yeah, that's the rumor. Of course, I haven't heard much from her lately..." He shrugs. "If it were my babe I'd have spent some time with him."

Niyath> Hanreth senses that Niyath clearly doesn't understand this. << Did Jenna make him feel bad about it? >>

Jenna nods, "Course you would've. So, anyway, I'm interrupting again, aren't I?"

Dragon> Hanreth bespoke Niyath with << No. He feels bad because she seemed upset about it. He does not like to see her upset. >>

S'phan laughs. "Not at all. What was it I was going to tell you about Keara? I don't remember anyway..."

Jenna grins, though her expression is fond. "I dunno. It was your story."

S'phan kicks at the stable floor. "Well...anyway...doing any running lately?"

Niyath> Hanreth senses that Niyath considers. << She was not upset, exactly. Surprised. She did not expect that. And she says again that it is not fair for her to be upset about it. >> She admits, << She has said something like that to Alirath's rider as well. >>

Jenna shakes her head. "Not a whit. Niyath and I have been doing some long flights - up to Ruatha and down to Boll." She rubs at her sunburned and freckled nose. "Which reminds me, I should get some salve for this before it peels."

S'phan nods. "Let me walk you to the infirmary?"

Jenna nods. "Sure." She hops off the fence, bare feet landing lightly in hay. "I love flying in the top thermals though. The really high ones?" She starts slowly for the door.

Dragon> Niyath senses that Hanreth queries, << She does not like it when our riders fly other women? >>

S'phan nods. "I do too. And, there's nothing like a long ride without going between...if you've got nowhere to go, that is."

Niyath> Hanreth senses that Niyath considers and then says, apparently on her own, << She would say she should not have a say in it. >>

Dragon> Niyath senses that Hanreth asks innocently, << Is she upset because she is not being flown? >>

Jenna nods. "Or just to get the lay of the land. Or the feel of the wind. Niyath loves it up there. and you just shoot along. *That's* a wonderful feeling." She tilts her head, "Definately something positive to focus on."

S'phan grins. "Absolutely." He motions toward the door. "Shall we?"

Niyath> Hanreth senses that Niyath was helping, though at that question she snorts, firmly rejecting that idea so fast that her rider certainly wasn't asked.

Jenna nods, heading on through.

You head into the Infirmary.
Infirmary(#935RJ$)
This large cavern, used for healing both humans and dragons, is large enough to hold several dragons comfortably. Now, however, a number of the stone couches have been converted into partioned cubicles in which human patients can recuperate from illnesses or wounds, if they're too weak to return to their weyr, hold or crafthall. One end of the room, nearest the door to the living cavern, is lined with additional cots. A large, white circle, with a purple caduceus in the center has been painted on one wall. Another wall has been painted white. The rest have been left their natural cavern color. A sink with hot and cold running taps is mounted on the wall next to the doorway to the south. Covering half of the eastern wall are several cabinets with glass fronts and storage drawers. Looking in the cabinets you can see a vast collection of herbs and medicines used by the Healers.

S'phan comes in from the bowl.
S'phan has arrived.

Jenna looks around for some of the assistants, and not finding anyone, starts peering carefully through labeled jars for what she's looking for. "I suppose I could just oil it. S'what I do with Niyath's hide, so it has to be good, right? My shoulders've been kinda tight too. Bet they're burned, or just about there."

S'phan glances at her shoulders. "Um...the skin feels tight, you mean? And, I know where that salve is, I think..." he starts rooting around in the collection of jars.

Jenna nods. "Yeah. Hey, don't move anything around too much. Sarin'd skin me alive."

S'phan stops. "Oops, sorry..."

Niyath> Hanreth senses that Niyath follows up her rejection of that idea by asking, << How did you feel, when your rider was with that woman? >>

Jenna grins a bit, "No, s'okay, just," she starts straightening jars, "There. Is it all back right? Well, close enough maybe. What're we really looking for, anyway? Will it say sunburn on it?"

S'phan frowns. "I'm not so sure...maybe." He happens on a jar. "Hey! How about this? It's got a little numbweed, a little oil..."

Dragon> Niyath senses that Hanreth speaks as if with authority, << He found it pleasurable, so I approved. It was new, but it felt good. >> A pause. << Do you think it will be like that when we... I fly? >>

Jenna peers at it, and then flips off the cap to cautiously dip a pinky in it. "Maybe? Feels pretty good. Doesn't smell too bad... What do you think?"

S'phan sniffs, then dips his finger in. "Yes, this is it. If it's not, well, I doubt it can do any harm. Want me to smear some on?" He points his finger at her nose playfully."

Niyath> Hanreth senses that Niyath grumbles. << I do not know. I would think it would hurt. >>

Dragon> Hanreth bespoke Niyath with << Why would it hurt? >>

Jenna laughs. "Might as well. Don't waste it." She carefully rubs the tiny bit on her pinky into one sun-browned shoulder. "Oooh, yeah, there's definately a bit of numbweed in it."

Dragon> Niyath senses that Niyath is clearly not happy to be discussing this. << Riders should not be one on top of the other like that. >>

S'phan dabs the cream on Jenna's nose. "There. I hope that's better."

Jenna sighs. "Much. Thanks, Saph. I appreciate it. All of it."

S'phan smiles and puts one arm around Jenna for a quick hug. "My pleasure...if I can ever help out, let me know."

Jenna almost seems to hold her breath at the contact, expression apprehensive. When no explosion results, she breathes a quiet sigh of relief. "I think you just did, Saph."

S'phan sighs. "Well...back to work. Take care, Jenna, and let me know if you need me."

Jenna nods. "You too, Saph. And I will, definately.

Niyath> Hanreth senses that Niyath is unable to suppress a burst of surprise and with it the image of Toranth's rider, hugging hers. And it apparently wasn't terribly icky after all.

Dragon> Hanreth bespoke Niyath with << What did /you/ feel? >>

Niyath> Hanreth senses that Niyath is clearly startled. << I did not know. I was talking to you. >>

Dragon> Hanreth bespoke Niyath with << It must not have been horrible if you did not notice. >>

Niyath> Hanreth senses that Niyath agrees, though she still remains suspicious. << No. Not horrible. >> A pause and she ventures cautiously, << Maybe that would be okay. >>

Dragon> Hanreth bespoke Niyath with << The squeezing or the flying? >>

High above the bowl, Hanreth spirals down to the area above the southwestern bowl.

Niyath> Hanreth senses that Niyath is still cautious, << The - she called it a 'hug'. >>

Dragon> Niyath senses that Hanreth reassures, << Hugging is good. >>

Niyath> Hanreth senses that Niyath observes, << You are back. - It was not bad, >> she admits.

Dragon> Hanreth bespoke Niyath with << I am back and now J'nas wants to hide. >>

Niyath> I bespoke Hanreth with << Funny. So does Jenna. >>

Hanreth whuffles Jenna on his way to the barracks.

Jenna ohs. "Hanreth. I, ah, I think Leah needs to see me." She starts off at a trot towards the weyrleader's weyrs.

Hanreth croons to Niyath and ambles into the barracks.

J'nas stumbles when he spies Jenna, "Oh! hello Jenna. I have to, ah... take care of some stuff inside." He gives her a perplexed look before resumes course.

Jenna is already making for the weyrleader's weyrs, and waves in response.
